LO1- 5 Examples of interactive media products

Netflix homepage- This is aimed at younger mainstreamer people as the older generation will use channels like ITV player of BBC iPlayer. Netflix allows people to watch new shows exclusively with a plethora of genres available.

The purpose of this is to allow people to direct through shows to choose what they want to watch. It will come up with a description of the show when hovering over it to tell the audience what it is about so they may become interested. In addition, a lot of Netflix shows have an auto preview feature to try and intrigue the audience into watching the show. This is more common with adult films as children might get confused if they move on and something automatically pops up.

People with impairments could access this product by having a screen reader to read out the description of a film. They could also listen to the preview of a film as that has audio so blind people can hear.

Netflix have to be aware of the legal and ethical issues for example the Data Protection Act. This means when users sign in with their details then it cannot be published publicly as that is showing others private information. Additionally, copyright laws need to be followed so Netflix need a license and permission to publish TV shows that they haven’t made or they could be sued for big money. In terms of ethical issues, the on screen cannot be in an image so screen readers can read it aloud to an impaired user. This would be ethically wrong as it means blind users cannot access Netflix.

In my opinion this product is effective as the menus are easy to navigate through and every show tells you what you are going to watch. Also, Netflix allows impaired users to use the product simply with the use a screen reader and preview video.

PS5 Home screen- This is aimed at early adopters so people who can buy products when they are in a shortage of stock. This is because PS5s at the moment are rarely available for the recommended retail price so people will purchase them for extra money to get the console now. This is people in ABC2 class as they will have a high and stable income.

The purpose of this product is to allow people to scroll through and see what games they have downloaded and ready to play. When hovering over a game it will show the achievements you have completed so far so you can track your progress. Overall it is made to entertain a user as they are in control of the inputs.

PS5 Can be accessible to a disabled audience as they could use a screen reader to read out the text on screen. This is useful as blind people cannot see what is on the screen so they need it to be read out to them. Also, a screen reader can tell disabled users what button to press if they can't see the screen.

Sony would have to consider legal and ethical issues when making the PS5, for example, Sony could not put any game on the console that they don’t have the rights to as that would be copyright infringement. Also, people will put personal details on the PS5 to make accounts or even add their bank details to make transactions on the console itself. This means Sony must ensure that the personal data does not get leaked anywhere or they could be taken to court. Sony need to make the PS5 accessible for the impaired audience so that need to include features that allow people with disabilities to access the product. This could be a speaker that tells blind people what to press when hovering over a certain button. This means that anyone can navigate their way through the menus to find what they want. It would unethical to not include this feature as it would mean blind people could not use a PS5.

Personally, I think that this product is effective as if your vision is good, the menus are easy to use and don't need complex devices but this might not be accessible to blind users as this is a visual product. This means that the menus have little text and it mainly images.

FIFA 22- This is aimed at a mainstream audience as FIFA is a mainstream product. This is because FIFA is the most popular football game by a mile and football is the most popular sport in the world. The gender of the audience would be male as the majority of EA's audience is male. The social grade of people buying this product would be people in the ABC1 class as the game costs a minimum of £50 so people of a lower class would need to spend that on more important items.

The purpose of this product is for people to play a football simulation game  so they can manage their favourite teams or build their own squad and take it online. It is a product designed to entertain its audience as it is an immersive game of the most popular sport in the world.

Fifa 22 is accessible to a disabled audience as the menus could have a screen reader for someone who is blind. Also, if a disabled user is playing a game, for example they may have no arms then they can use a controller used my feet to control players in game.

EA sports are the company that make the FIFA games mad they would need to consider legal and ethical issues to avoid getting into trouble. This could include only showcasing teams that are licensed or have a partnership with EA. For example, the football club Juventus are not licensed in FIFA 22 as they have an exclusive partnership with Konami and PES. This results in Juventus being named ‘Piemonte Calcio’ in FIFA 22 as EA don’t have the rights to use their identity. Personal details cannot be leaked as other people and hackers can access another users account if they have the correct information. This could results in a loss of in game money which could of been gained by using real life money. In terms of ethical issues it is similar to other interactive products as blind people need a screen reader to access the menus or they will not be able to use the product which is unfair for them.

This product is effective as the menus are simple to navigate through and can be used by impaired users. However, it is hard to actually play the game if you are disabled as you might not be able to use controllers if you have missing limbs.
